Tips: Choosing and using a wallet

There are different types of wallets: hardware, desktop and mobile, to name a few, so be sure to choose a wallet that will provide the mobility and security you need.

Electric Coin Co. and the Zcash Foundation do not officially endorse specific digital wallets, other than the Zcashd and Zebrad full node wallets for advanced users. The information on this page is provided without warranty or guarantees. Always do your own research.

Keep in mind, your wallet is like your bank account, so take extra precautions with your passwords, and be sure to perform regular backups to protect your money.

Most wallets are free to download, so don't be afraid to try more than one, experimenting with small amounts, before committing.

Users storing larger amounts of cryptocurrency often use a custodian or hardware wallet.

Mobile wallets with Zcash shielded support

With Zcash shielded addresses and transactions, data like sender, receiver and amount are encrypted, meaning that even though the transactions are verified on the public blockchain, no person can see the data inherent to these transactions. This is widely regarded as the strongest privacy in any cryptocurrency, and it’s one of the best things about Zcash. To use shielded addresses and transactions, download one of these wallets.

Wallets with transparent-address support only

Zcash transparent transactions are like Bitcoin transactions. Sender, receiver, amount and the data are publicly visible on the blockchain. Without the encryption of shielded transactions, these are computationally lighter and, therefore, simpler to execute from a mobile device. There are many wallets that support Zcash transparent transactions, a sampling of which is below:

Full-node wallets (advanced)

A full-node wallet is for users who may want to mine Zcash and validate transactions and blocks, in addition to sending and receiving ZEC. Note that to use a full-node wallet, your computer will have to sync the entire blockchain, which takes significant time and memory.

The official, Linux-based, full-node wallet, updated and maintained by core developers from the Electric Coin Co.

Zecwallet is a UI frontend wallet for Zcashd. Zecwallet's embedded node features Fast Sync, which can sync the Zcash blockchain up to 33 percent faster than an external node.

Get some Zcash for your wallet

Zcash can be purchased on any number of exchanges. We recommend Gemini because it's easy to use and it offers privacy options that others don't. If Gemini isn't available in your country, check out some of these other exchanges.
